Gam-COVID-Vac (Sputnik V vaccine)

Description

Gam-COVID-Vac (Sputnik V, V-vaccine) is a first registered COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine was developed in the National Center for Microbiology and Epidemiology named after Gamalei under the leadership of Doctor of Medical Sciences, D. Yu. Logunov, who is also famous for development of vaccines against Ebola and MERS viruses.

Sputnik V  is a genetically engeneered two-component vaccine, based on the human adenovirus ( common cold virus). Two recombinant adenoviral vectors – adenovirus 26 serotype (Ad26, “component I”) and adenovirus 5 serotype (Ad5, “component II”) – were fused with spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, being injected into the body they stimulate immune response against COVID.

Sputnik V should be administered intramuscularly in two stages with an interval of 3 weeks.  The Ad26 based vaccine is used on the first day and the Ad5 vaccine is used on the 21st day to boost response.
